Maersk Supply Service recently announced plans to build its first dedicated Wind Installation Vessel, and upon completion, immediately deploy the vessel to the Empire offshore wind farm installation site off the U.S. coast.
The new vessel design supports feeder installation operations and will be instrumental in enabling more efficient and cost-and-time-saving wind farm construction.
Owing to its unique, patented feeder-based methodology, the vessel’s installation capacity is projected to be 30% more efficient than conventional jack-up vessels.
Mærsk’s in-house team – highly skilled users of Shoreline Wind’s Design™ solution – utilized the software to simulate feeder-based installation during the tendering and concept development phase, and for modeling offshore construction processes.
According to Lars Blicher, Offshore Wind Director at Maersk Supply Service, Design™ proved exceptionally useful to their development team, especially given the complexity of U.S. offshore operations.
“All scenarios must be considered for testing wind farm installations in U.S. offshore area, as our concept needs to assess the impact of factors such as Jones Act vessel restrictions and harsh weather conditions. By using Shoreline Wind´s advanced simulation solution, we have been able to provide fast and precise insights on cost estimations, weather downtime assessments, installation time, which has greatly supported our research for a validated new installation concept”.
As the U.S. offshore wind market accelerates, the development of Mærsk’s state-of-the-art vessel underscores how industry collaboration can be successfully leveraged to develop innovative technologies that will enable the U.S. supply chain to achieve faster deployment of both bottom-fixed and floating projects.
